Most people have heard of hypertension, which is another name for high blood pressure. However, another condition that some people suffer from is hypotension, which is low blood pressure. A person who has a blood pressure that is below 90/60 is considered to have low blood pressure.

The risk of developing low or high blood pressure typically increases with age. This is mainly from the changes that take place inside the body as we get older. Some people who experience low blood pressure do not have any symptoms, others may experience blurred vision, fainting episodes, lightheadedness or dizziness, lack of concentration, and fatigue.

While most people know the risks of hypertension, many do not realize that hypotension can cause just as many issues. When blood pressure is normal the heart is not stressed and is working the way that it should. When the pressure becomes too high or too low it can cause a strain on the heart, which can lead to different health issues.

1. Hypotension Symptoms

As mentioned, there are many people who suffer from low blood pressure who do not experience any symptoms at all. However, there are some common symptoms of low blood pressure that you should know about and if you are suffering from any of them you may want to check your blood pressure to see if it is low. The symptoms of low blood pressure may include but are not limited to, dizziness, nausea, vomiting, confusion, weakness, fainting, trouble concentrating, and fainting. Some of these symptoms may be associated with other diseases or conditions as well, so it is important to see your doctor for a proper diagnosis.

 

2. Eating More Salt Can Help

Blood pressure and electrolytes are closely tied together. It is for this reason that the diet for high blood pressure includes eating more potassium, magnesium, and calcium while lowering the amount of sodium that is consumed.

For someone who suffers from low blood pressure, eating more sodium may be beneficial. Eating more salt can help increase the electrolytes in the body and can help raise your blood pressure enough to get it into the normal range.

It is important to not overdo it though as this may result in blood pressure becoming too high.

 

3. Drinking-Water is Important

It cannot be said enough, drinking water is one of the most important and best things that you can do for your body.

Most people simply do not drink enough water throughout the day and are suffering in a constant state of dehydration. Not only can drinking plenty of water help to level out your blood pressure, but it is good for your overall health as well.

When you are drinking more water your body can create more blood, which improves the symptoms associated with having low blood pressure.

 

4. Hormones and Low Blood Pressure

Many people do not realize how important hormones are in the body. Hormones can play a large role in the development of low blood pressure.

This is one of the reasons that pregnant women tend to have lower blood pressure. When you are pregnant your body produces more progesterone, which can alter blood pressure and may lead to hypotension.

When your body overproduces certain hormones such as progesterone, it can lead to the development of lower blood pressure.

 

5. Anemia

Many people who suffer from low blood pressure will also suffer from anemia. Anemia is when a person has a low red blood cell count. This is often linked to having a low amount of iron.

It can also be caused by a low amount of vitamin B12. Consuming more vitamins and minerals is one of the best ways to combat low blood pressure. B12 is difficult to get if you are a vegetarian and vegans will often miss out on good sources of iron.

Low levels of these nutrients are a likely cause of your low blood pressure if you are vegan or vegetarian.

 

6. Vasodilators Should be Avoided

If you have low blood pressure it is important to avoid medications, foods, and other items that may make it worse. Vasodilators are substances that can widen the blood vessels. Beets and beetroot juice, and aspirin are common vasodilators.

In addition, there are some sports supplements that contain nitric oxide, which is also a vasodilator. If you are starting a new diet, supplement, or medication, it is important to discuss it with your doctor first.
