Soothing Home Remedies for Sunburn

Sunburn can be extremely painful. Prolonged exposure to the UV lights of the sun can be harmful to the skin, causing it to turn red. The skin may become extremely sensitive and possibly blister. There are many different ways that you can relieve the pain of your sunburn.

1. Minimize Exposure to the Sun

The first and most important thing that you can do if you have a sunburn is to simply stay away from what caused it in the first place. If your skin is burnt you need to try to stay out of the sun as much as possible in order to allow your skin some time to heal. It is especially important to stay inside from the hours of 10 am until 4 pm. These are the times that the UV rays are typically the strongest.

When you do go outside it is important to make sure that you put on a hat, wear light clothing that is light in color, and to wear sunglasses to help protect your eyes from harmful UV rays. When your skin has become sunburnt you need to allow it some time to heal, so make sure that you avoid the sun as much as you possibly can.


2. Compresses

A sunburn causes the skin to become inflamed, which in turn can cause you to experience pain. Sometimes even simple movements can irritate the inflamed skin. A cool compress can be used as a way to help cool down the skin and the burn. You may also want to try sitting in front of a fan as the cool air can help to provide some relief from the burn. Cool water can also help to reduce symptoms of a sunburn. Running the skin under a cool shower may help alleviate some of the pain.

You can also simply dip a cloth in cool water and then apply it to the areas of the skin that have been affected. When the cloth gets warm, simply run it under cool water and apply it again. It is important to make sure that you do not add any bath salts, oils, or perfumes to the bathwater. All of these items can increase the sensitivity of the skin and may cause the symptoms to become worse. When you are using a towel to dry off make sure that you are patting the tender skin and not rubbing it as this can cause further irritation.


4. Hydrate

Milk protein, which is found in skim milk can help to soothe any type of burn that you may experience.

To use this remedy you will want to use a one to four ratio of milk to water. You can then add in a bit of ice for a further cooling effect. Dip a cloth into the mixture and then apply the cloth to the skin that is bothering you. Keep the compress on the area for about fifteen minutes or so. You can use this method about once every two to four hours.


9. Oatmeal

When you think of oatmeal, chances are your mind goes to it being a great breakfast food that is full of fiber and helps to keep you full all morning. While this is very true and you should consider adding oatmeal to your healthy diet, this grain also comes in handy when it comes to soothing the pain associated with sunburn. Oatmeal water can help to relieve the pain in sunburned skin and also helps to improve the recovery time.

To use this method you will need to take some dry oatmeal and place it in a piece of muslin cloth. Tie the cloth and place it in some chilled water for a bit. When ready, remove the oatmeal. The water that is left can be used on your sunburn every two to four hours to provide you with some relief from the pain. You can also simply put some oatmeal in a cool bath and soak in it.


10. Lemon Juice with Rosewater

If you are truly suffering from a bad sunburn and want a home remedy to help alleviate some of the pain that you are experiencing, especially during the night when you are trying to sleep, this method may be just what you are looking for. You will need equal parts glycerin, lemon juice and rosewater. You should mix these ingredients together carefully.

Once it is mixed you can apply the liquid to your skin at night before you go to sleep. While you are sleeping the lemon juice and rosewater will provide you with some much-needed relief from the pain and itching that sunburns may cause. When you wake up in the morning it is important to make sure that you rinse your skin off as you do not want to leave this mixture on for long periods of time throughout the day.
