Ginseng is also a metabolism booster, and it gives you energy to keep moving during the day. Having a little ginseng tea in the morning might be just the thing to give you that little pep in your step and balance out your body.

Technically, cayenne pepper is a variety of the capsicum pepper and can most often be bought in dried, powdered form. 3. Mustard

(You can usually find lots of these in your spice or health food aisle, and sometimes you can even mix them together for an interesting new flavor to your food; every pepper tastes differently.) Black pepper is well-known for improving heart health and metabolism and consumed liberally it can have a positive impact on your immune system and dental health, too.

Pepper is a very powerful disinfectant. Ideally, you want to buy it in peppercorn form and ground it for use – that way, the oils are released into the food for the best, richest flavor. In powdered form, this spice can dry out and give you some of the flavors but none of the really good stuff.

Ginger is a root with a little bit of spice to it, one that is almost similar to horse-radish. The first use some people think of for ginger is its use in ginger cookies; for other people, they think of a steaming drink with ginger in it – in some parts of the world, a drink with turmeric and ginger steeped in milk is a traditional remedy for the flu.

Ginger also has many potential uses in the food and can give an entirely new flavor to a sauce, marinade or an entire dish. Ginger can be purchased in already-processed powders or pastes, or as a root; dry powders should be used with caution as it can be extremely strong.

Ginger is known for helping with stomach upsets and it can also speed up the metabolism, helping you to lose weight. And ginger is extremely versatile. Be sure to buy fresher roots rather than older, dried out ones.

7. Green tea

Green tea is a very acquired taste for some – but it’s not outright unpleasant, and it can be turned into both a hot drink or had as an iced-tea instead: Be as liberal with the sugar and the milk as your diet allows for – here you can replace the milk with soy, or omit it entirely if you feel like it.

If you’ve never heard of chickweed before, its scientific name is Stellaria media – also known as chickweed, or common chickweed. Sometimes it’s also referred to as winterweed or crashes – though mostly, you can just worry about it being called common chickweed when you’re asking for it in the grocery store.

It’s already a plant that can be found in many gardens across the world, and it can be used as a vegetable in salads, and it is also known for its uses in traditional herbal medicine: It is extremely high in iron, and can be taken by anyone who suffers from a severe iron deficiency.

It also happens to be great to add to your healthy weight loss routine – including for your health. You should know that chickweed can be toxic to some animals – but in such large quantities that you don’t usually have to worry about it if it’s in your garden.

Cumin as a spice can be purchased most often in the ground and powdered form and used sparingly in dishes to give it some flavor. You can also usually buy whole seeds and crush them yourself – which some might prefer for the freshness of the seeds. Cumin oil can also be purchased as an essential oil – but remember that its use isn’t for food, essential oils are meant to be mixed into products you apply topically!
